Join our Broken Bay Team

The Broken Bay unit is based at Rowland Reserve, Bayview, on beautiful Pittwater, where our amazing team of volunteers fulfil a variety of on and off water roles.

Operational Boat Crew:  Our boat crew volunteers are broken down into three categories.

  • Competent Crew: Most members operate as crew. They are responsible for interacting with vessels or people needing assistance and generally are the first point of contact on scene.
  • Leading Crew: Master and operate our smaller 20 class rescue vessel and have overall responsibility for managing and controlling on-water assists and rescues in calm or near shore localities.
  • Coxswain/Master: Master and operate our large 30 class rescue vessel and have overall responsibility for Search and Rescue, managing and controlling on water assists and rescues out to 30 nautical miles to sea.

For each role, there is an extensive training program, comprising of both on-water practical skills and theory, aimed at supporting our mission of Saving Lives on the water.

Recruitment for these roles is managed via a number of crew trainee intakes per year, so when you join, you’re part of a larger induction group, all learning and progressing together.

Community Support Specialists:

Did you know that our unit also relies on dedicated volunteers who love what we do, but prefer keeping their feet on land? Roles vary from person to person, covering a number of different skills including;

  • Event Coordination
  • Fundraising
  • Procurement
  • Grant applications and sponsorship
  • Management of our Supporters (Radio) Club
  • Accounting/Book keeping

  • Involvement in various community engagement opportunities
  • First Aid / Lifesaving
  • Training
  • These roles are available immediately, making them a great way to join Broken Bay straight away, whilst waiting for an opportunity to join the boat crew training.

    Interested in joining?
Then we would love to hear from you!  Read on for details on our two recruitment processes for Operational and Community Support Specialist roles.

Keen to join our operational boat crew?

We ask everyone considering become vessel crew to attend an Information Evening.  These sessions cover the following:

    • Who we are
    • What we do
    • Our expectations of new members
    • The typical training journey to becoming Crew

These information sessions are led by our unit Executive Team, and are a good opportunity for you to also understand if joining Marine Rescue will fit well with your lifestyle and family priorities.

2025 Information Nights to be released later this year

    What happens after that?

After the information evenings, if you are excited by what you hear and would like to continue your journey and become part of our team, then we ask you to submit a formal application which includes a mandatory ID check.  We then conduct 1:1 interviews to learn more about you, what you hope to get out of Marine Rescue and what skills and experiences you bring.  This is also a chance for you to ask questions on anything you may have missed at the information sessions.

As we have more applicants than we have places, we then face the difficult decision on which candidates to invite to join us as our next trainees.  If you are unsuccessful in one intake there may be opportunities in a later intake. We encourage you to reapply or consider one of our non-operational specialist roles as an interim step, allowing you to join the unit and start experiencing life as part of our team.

If you would like to confirm you interest in applying to attend an information session, please email us via membership.brokenbay@marinerescuensw.com.au
